MATCH REPORT
SENIORS
EAST MIDLANDS 21, NORTH WEST 14
On a gloriously sunny day, Melton Mowbray RFC was host to 3 regional
matches, 1 Senior womens and 2 girls matches, U18s and U15s. The summer-like weather brought out
quite a few supporters to watch the games.
After last week’s defeat, East Midlands Seniors were determined not
to let it affect this week’s performance. North West
kicked off the first half and East Midlands met this with some excellent play in the first 10 minutes. Scrum half, Cathie
Burke scored first with centre, Simone Shepherd converting the try which increased East
Midlands’ already high team spirit. East Midlands kept on the pressure and saw Full back, Clare Riddell make a searing run
through North West’s defence, beating the full back and scoring a
try under the posts which she also converted.
Half time score – 14-0

The second half saw North
West start with more pressure on the East Midlands
team which resulted in a try by No. 8, Anna Goatman which was converted by full back, Rachael
Thomas. East Midlands made some substitutions to refresh the team and cover injuries. Flanker,
Clare Robinson then scored East Midlands’ third try which Clare
Riddell again converted. A temporary lapse in concentration saw North West’s Rachel Finnan intercept an East
Midlands’ pass and run in their second try which Rachel Thomas again converted. North West kept the pressure on
for the last 5 minutes which saw them camped on the East Midlands 5 metre line, however, stout
defence and courageous tackling meant they were unable to cross the try line before the final whistle.
Final score – 21 - 14
